Port Vale Preview: What we can expect from the opening day line-up and where Wolves need to step up after pre-season

It would be over-egging it to suggest there is real anticipation for the season ahead but Wolves’ opener at home to Port Vale in the Carabao Cup will provide a novel and reasonably interesting test for a new beginning. It will also be an important marker to see how far Cesar Peixoto’s side have progressed during pre-season.
“All the players know what they have to do without the ball and with the ball,” said the head coach, looking ahead to this evening’s match. “The confidence with these [pre-season] games has improved a lot.”
In some respects this is just an extension of pre-season. A warm-up for the truer test in the Championship next week. Unless, of course, Wolves lose and then the whole place will be up in arms. There might well be some explaining to do if things don’t go to plan given the lack of movement in the summer window.
