About The Wanderers Post
The Wanderers Post is a brand new CounterPress title aimed at delivering in-depth, quality coverage of Wolverhampton Wanderers for less than the price of a matchday burger every month. Launched for the start of the 2026/27 season, and coinciding with the club’s 150th year, The Wanderers Post will be steered by local journalism at its heart alongside the experience of a seasoned Wolves watcher. So, here’s an introduction from the team:
Tom Gibson:
A lot of Wolves fans may have just clicked on this platform and be thinking, “who’s this chap? I’ve never heard of him before.” So, I’m here to introduce myself! I’m Tom Gibson, a football journalist born and raised in Wolverhampton. I graduated with a first class from the University of Derby’s football journalism course where I took the opportunity to gain vital experience in the industry, at home and in Europe.
I have written for various publications about Wolves including the Express & Star, Wolves Foundation and internally working for the club on a voluntary basis covering the women’s first team and men’s under-21s, where I witnessed Mateus Mané’s progression first hand.
I spent many years in the stands watching Wolves alongside my Grandad, growing up watching players like Nouha Dicko lead the attack, Jack Price challenging for every ball in midfield, and Helder Costa working his magic out wide. One game that will always stick out for me was the trip to Cardiff City in that incredible promotion season; I was in away end that day and couldn’t even watch the two penalties at the end! The scenes after the final whistle will never be forgotten – it felt like the moment that Wolves had one foot in the Premier League. A feeling I’m sure many are hoping returns to Molineux this season, too.
Now from the press box, my aim is simple: to provide accurate, insightful and engaging content throughout the men’s first team, the academy and the women’s team - who begin an exciting chapter in the Women’s Super League 2 for the first time in the club's history. To work alongside Johnny is an exciting part of this journey.
Between the two of us we feel there is a gap in the market with coverage on the club we both love and we are here to fulfil that in the best way we can. This club is a part of who we are, for many of us it’s where we are from. It’s always been Wolves; it always will be. So ahead of the club’s 150th anniversary, please join us on this journey with The Wanderers Post.
Johnny Phillips:
From watching a Football Special disgorging hundreds of travelling Wolves fans at a Merseyside train station at my first away day in the 1980s, to witnessing the play-off heartaches of the 90s, the Premier League elevation of the 2000s, the dip that followed, then the Nuno revolution of the late 2010s to the present day landmark of 150 years of Wolves. It has been some journey and Wolves has become an integral part of life through all these ups and downs.
Covering the club in a professional capacity for Sky Sports, the Express & Star and latterly through authoring three books, has added an extra dimension. This has proved a tough club to escape. But Wolves has also brought with it a lifetime of friendships and some of the most captivating experiences imaginable, as both a supporter and journalist.
In Tom, it’s great to have a young local Wolverhampton journalist at the heart of our coverage. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in with some features, comment and analysis alongside regular retro pieces for those of us who have too many memories in the bank. I hope there will be more Moutinhos than McGinlays to write about but, whatever the future holds, it’s great to be part of The Wanderers Post and continue that lifelong affiliation with Wolves.
