Not only is Friday’s Carabao Cup first round tie, against Port Vale, Cesar Peixoto’s first game in charge but it is also the only instance of the club opening a season with a League Cup tie instead of the traditional league beginning. It is an unusual quirk of the fixture calendar and is, in part, a product of the later start of the league season due to the World Cup.
Quite how Peixoto’s debut season in English football will pan out is anybody’s guess at this stage, which makes the opening period so important to get fans on board from from the team’s perspective. The first day of the season is not always a good indicator of what is to follow, but more often than not the early signs are worth heeding.
