Even by the standards of today’s ownership, the manner of head coach Cesar Peixoto’s arrival at Wolves was surprising. Only a few days after appearing in the club’s promotional video to announce the signing of Raul Jimenez, Rob Edwards was jettisoned in a move that blindsided several of the club’s own hierarchy.
Different circumstances and different times, but 20 years ago shockwaves reverberated around the Compton Park training ground when another managerial change caught everyone by surprise.
Chief executive Jez Moxey was on West Park boating lake with his youngest daughter on 1 July 2006, just hours before England’s World Cup quarter-final with Portugal, when he took a call from manager Glenn Hoddle, who tendered his resignation. Moxey was not totally surprised by the news after a frugal summer with no prospects of squad strengthening. It had been a fraught end to the previous season when the CEO, in his programme notes, criticised results as Wolves finished seventh, eight points shy of a play-off place.
